We received a huge response from our #UF17 campaign – many of our new students loved the idea of changing their social media profile photos and cover letters to ones that demonstrated their excitement to join the Gator Nation.

We also heard from other members of the Gator Nation that wanted images of their own. Well, our talented art director Elecia was happy to oblige and created a set of social media images for the years 2006 1995 1945 through 2013 2017. The images include a large cover photo for Facebook, and two square-sized images for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – or any other social media platform that takes square images..

The Office of University Relations is responsible for communicating the overall public image of UF. In executing many of the university’s vital communications initiatives with efforts spanning News, Government and Community Relations, Marketing, Creative Services, Social Media, and Public Affairs, University Relations provides a wide range of services.

The News Bureau is UF’s primary media relations office. From the latest research findings to outstanding student achievements, the News Bureau generates a steady stream of news about the university and responds to inquiries from journalists with local, state, national and international news organizations. It also provides media training.

Government Relations is charged with securing funding and substantive legislation that enables UF to provide research, teaching and service. The office works closely with government officials and their staffs at the federal, state, and local levels to advocate issues of importance to the University.

Community Relations is responsible for developing and maintaining “town-gown” relationships with individuals and business communities. From “Eye Opener” Discovery Breakfasts to implementing the annual University of Florida Campaign for Charities, Community Relations keeps UF and the public in close touch.

Marketing and Creative Services work closely together to develop and implement integrated marketing communications strategies designed to advance the university’s reputation and standing among wide-ranging target audiences. This is accomplished in a variety of ways, including graphics, print, photography, web design, video productions, advertising and marketing. The office’s strategic creative services are available to all colleges, departments and units across campus.

Our Social Media staff is a never-ending and always-current generator of information about what’s going on at UF. We connect with students and friends of the university, enable them to connect with each other and generally make life as a Gator just a bit more social.

The Office of Public Affairs addresses issues of concern for the university and serves as a liaison to media outlets. The office also handles issues for the university’s Board of Trustees and addresses public records requests.

The role of social media is literally growing with each passing minute. Few other vehicles provide so many opportunities to instantly create, connect and share. It is indeed the wave of “the right now,” and a vital part of UREL’s mission. As a core component of our communications efforts, the UF Social Media staff reaches thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and fans on a daily basis. With over 475,000 friends on Facebook, 35,000 followers on Twitter, and 188,000 views on YouTube, UF’s Social Media efforts are often the first point of contact across the Gator Nation for news, alerts, photos, videos, interesting facts about the University, and nearly all other meaningful and relevant content. They don’t own an “off” switch.

UF Social Media also provides resources, guidelines, policies and best practices as they relate to students, faculty and staff, as well as practical strategies to make the most of online networking and digital interaction.

July 2, 2012 marked the 150^th anniversary of the passage of Morrill Act, which gave Americans greater access to higher education and created land-grant colleges. The University of Florida, the state’s flagship land-grant institution, rolled out a major cross-media campaign to commemorate this landmark legislation.

The Office of University Relations was asked by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) to create a campaign to create awareness of the Morrill Act, its 150^th anniversary, and its lasting impact on higher education. Working closely with Dr. Teri Balser, Dean and Professor at the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and  a committee of volunteers from around campus, the Office of University Relations developed and implemented a comprehensive communications strategy to inform  the campus community and residents of Florida about the importance of the Morrill Act and how UF has stayed true to its spirit by  providing students with access to diverse, high quality educational opportunities.

The Creative Services team decided on the theme “Land Grand,” as it paid off the far-reaching effect of land-grant universities over the years. The communication efforts included campus-wide banners and a comprehensive website dedicated to the commemoration. The site put the celebration into historical perspective with a navigable timeline that tracks the path of legislation impacting higher education over the years. The “Land Grand” theme was reinforced with large scenic images that serve as a backdrop on each page. Utilizing adaptive design, the website provides an extremely consistent experience across phones, tablets and desktops.

University Relations also produced a public service television commercial, magazine ads, brochures, press releases, and a PR “tool kit” (complete with ad slicks, graphic elements, and guidelines) for all 67 county IFAS extension offices to individually promote the milestone. Additionally, UF was a proud participant at the 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, a major summer event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. that featured a tribute to the Morrill Act.

The net result of these combined efforts was a greater awareness of the Morrill Act, better understanding and appreciation of the land-grant university system, And an enhanced appreciation for the enormous contributions to the state made by the university.

In our work with University Relations, what stands out for me is creativity and commitment to excellence. We brought the barest nucleus of an idea and they worked with us to generate what promises to be an award-winning campaign with a state-of-the-art website and full suite of media approaches to accomplish our goals. I felt like we could play with all kinds of ideas and make them work.
